We Could Be Heroes: The Cover

Cover We Could Be Heroes

Well, hello there! I am so excited to share the cover for We Could Be Heroes, coming February 25, 2020 from Atheneum Books for Young Readers. Let me tell you a little bit about it.

The illustration is by the very talented illustrator Alexandra Bye. You can learn more about her work here.

The very talented book designer Karyn Lee designed the book. You might be wondering what is the difference between the illustrator and the designer. Well, Alexandra did the art work, but Karyn designed how everything will look on the page and all that kind of stuff.

One of the neat things about publishing a book is that you begin to learn how many people are involved in the process, and the illustrator and book designer are two VERY important people because while there is old saying that says, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” in fact, we DO judge books by their covers and their design. And so I am so grateful to Alexandra and Karyn for their amazing work.

You might also be wondering what exactly you are looking at in this cover. Well, you are looking at Hank, Maisie, and Booler as they look down on their hometown of Meadowlark, Montana. Sweet Booler–the dog–has seizures, and a lot of the story resolves around Hank and Maisie’s efforts to make sure that no one treats Booler like less than just because of his disability. Booler is a big love. Hank and Maisie love him, and I hope you will love him too.
